Had you asked me a few years ago what I thought about primers.. I would have told you not to bother, don’t waste your money… I remember being sure that they were a money making scheme - by companies trying to coax us into buying yet another product to add into our makeup routine. To be frank, I never displayed any signs of MY makeup falling off throughout the day, so I didn't see the point.
If you asked me what I think of primers now… An entirely different story. Primers were designed to bridge the gap (if you like) between your skincare and makeup, creating a barrier for your skincare to work and your makeup to sit perfectly on top. Some primers have skincare elements in, but I would never replace your moisturiser for a ‘hydrating’ primer.
I’m not one for adding extra steps into my makeup routine for fun, some days I use primer, other days I won’t. If there is a specific look I’m trying to achieve or my skin is behaving in a certain way I tend to gravitate toward the said primer.
I do believe there is a primer out there for everyone depending on your skin type or what you want to achieve. The good ones do make a real difference with the longevity of your makeup.
Recently I was asked a question about open pores and if primers will help smooth or fill them in, You can get primers that are a bit like ‘polyfilla’ if you will.. They will do the job for a while, but at the end of the day the issue is still there. Contrary to popular belief, you can’t get rid of an open pore, once they are there they are there for good. Good skincare will help pores appear smaller but will not get rid of them.
L’oreal Nude Magique Blur Cream primer:
This primer is tinted and gives the skin that soft focus effect, blurring imperfections and softening the complexion. This won’t solve the open pore problem, but will help to minimise the appearance. £9.99 is a pretty good price in my opinion.
Becca backlight primer:
I have spoken about this product in a previous post; I cannot stress enough how much I love it. If you desire a dewey luminous complexion then with this that is what you shall get. Give it a go… go on.
Kevyn Aucoin primed skin developer:
A treatment and primer in one. I use this primer regularly on most of my clients. It hydrates with hyaluronic acid, pore refines and anti-ages. Makeup sits beautifully on top and lasts all day. Two variations, normal to dry or normal to oily skin types. Click here to have a read.
New CID cosmetics I primer:
This super lightweight Primer serum glides on beautifully, with Shea butter and vitamin E, it helps protect and nourish the skin without leaving a trace. Great for all skin types.
Cover FX illuminating primer:
This silicone free beauty imparts an instant natural luminous glow, helping improve the skin’s brightness over time. I would recommend this for normal to dry/combination skin.. GORGEOUS.
